Circular Explorations
Circles and lines have the power to suggest perpetual motion, energy, and stasis. With histories that predate the written word, circles and lines steadily jettison society into the future as a mainstay of technological and creative progress. In 2024, I began to explore circles in relation to line as a straight forward way to express their complex physical properties and philosophical underpinnings.
Line, a fundamental concept of Euclidean geometry, is straight and extends infinitely in both directions. Curved lines, seen in the natural world, have played an integral role in art, design, and the sciences since their early appearance in rock and cave drawings. Extending infinitely to the past and future, line forms the basis of not only circles, but our personal realities. The circle is recognized for its beauty and metaphorically stands in for.infinity and the cyclical nature of life. Drawn to the beauty and balance of the circle, I strive to express its powers of movement, forward and backward, as well as stasis, or the ability to spin in place. Although a simple shape, the circle often changes direction or confounds us as it has no beginning or end. To me, this stands for the path of life and progress: forward, backward, and sometimes standing still, but never ending.
My objective is to push the historical conversation that exists at the intersection of line and circular form into the contemporary and elevate its practical and metaphoric roles in our day-to-day moments. Geometry, physics, perspective, and history inform my work and support this vision.
